It is with great pleasure to announce that the 54th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Neurology will be held from May 29 to June 1, 2013 in Tokyo.

Neurology is a core discipline in medicine that covers a tremendously broad range of areas and specialties. However, for a variety of reasons it has up to now been misunderstood by both the general public and also medical practitioners alike as a somewhat specialist and distant discipline. Notwithstanding these perceptions, breakthroughs have continued to be steadily made in clarifying the pathogenesis of degenerative neurological disorders, which are some of the most difficult of all diseases to treat, and for the first time in human history clinical trials for fundamental treatment that is based on the pathomechanism are being implemented in Japan. More than 10 years have already gone by since we entered the 21st century, which was heralded as the "century of the brain," and from where we stand now, we are gradually becoming able to bequeath such words as "essential" and "idiopathic" to the 20th century.

It can well be said that the brain and the nervous system are characterized by their distinctness from other organs, in terms of the breadth of their anatomy, the extent of their functions, the fact that they are the organs that make us human, as well as the diversity of disease symptoms and disorders by which they can be afflicted. In today's society in which the declining birth rate and aging society are advancing, while there are many environmental factors threatening brain-health in various ways, people seek more than ever before to enjoy a rich and fruitful life and accordingly expectations of neurology and neurological science continue to grow. Dementia used to be largely the subject for psychiatric medicine, as a disorder with multiple psychiatric symptoms, the causes of which were unclear. However, today we are seeing tremendous advances in discoveries about the pathogenesis of dementia as well as the development of treatment regimens and neurologists are involved in the medical care of dementia on an almost daily basis. The field of neurology is well aware of the mission that lies before it, and we in this field are determined to step up to the challenge of responding to expectations.

The Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Neurology, in terms of its organization and management, has embarked on the first steps toward a new era. Exciting innovations have been incorporated into the scientific and educational programs. The 54th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Neurology is being prepared and developed thanks to the efforts and capabilities of all members of the society, led by the organizing committee, the scientific committee and the abstract review committee. I look forward to the participation of as many members as possible.
