The newly developed medical training system in Japan is having profound influences on medical universities, hospitals and local medical systems. The most serious problem is a severe shortage of working physicians in local hospitals, caused by this system change, especially of obstetricians and pediatricians. Is the number of neurologists also decreasing? The Japanese Society of Neurology sent the members questionnaires on the effects of this change on the field of neurology. The results are summarized and the current problems will be discussed.
